The Port Townsend, Wash., wireless technology company says its handheld electronic scanner can identify within a second whether someone is a fugitive from justice, has a violent criminal past or is a convicted sex offender.

The scanner reads the magnetic strip or barcode on state-issued ID cards, passports and driver’s licenses. It uses the information to determine whether a person shows up on wanted or watch lists.

I’m looking for a portable scanner with SD or similar memory. I don’t want the wand kind. I’d like one that fees the paper/photo thru it, up to 8.5" wide. It needs to be battery powered, and take some kind of memory, so that I can scan things on the go, without hooking it up to a computer. Is there such a thing out there?

This product is fairly new. Prices range from $500-$1000. The link above is a fairly cheap and good quality one for about $500. It can scan to excell, turbotax, word, and its pretty much compatible with any type of computer (PC, Mac OS). A co-worker of mine has one, and he says it is well worth the buy. Oh, and they have more compatible scanners and portable devices like that on neatco.com.
