I need a good portable fire scanner, any suggestions?

I’m away at school and have been sparkin up here as much as I can just listening to the online feeds but they’re delayed and I cant listen in my car. When I’m at home I listen to my dads portable Motorola RADIO. I need something with the same quality of sound/durability of my dads radio thats a scanner in any price range. Any suggestions would definitely be appreciated.

The 3 main players in the scanner market are Uniden/Bearcat,GRE and Radioshack.
I don’t think you will find a portable scanner with the same quality as a pro radio but they come close.

The type of scanner you need would depend on the type of systems you plan on listening to.
the current top of the line scanners are the GRE PSR-500,RadioShack PRO-106 and the Uniden Bearcat BCD396XT all these scanners are APCO-25 digital ready and they are expensive. If you don’t need digital then there are cheaper models and if you don’t need trunking then there are even cheaper models. You may want to contact the folks at http://www.scannermaster.com they specialize in scanners and carry all three brands,they would be able to help you decide what scanner to get based on what you plan on listening to.
Portable scanner for listening to trains?

I’ll mostly be using it to listen for trains and sometimes for emergency services. Does anyone know of any that fit this description and/or do you recommend any?
Go to Radioshack or Walmart and they will have what you want. Railroads operate in the 160mhz band in most areas.

Sure it can scan barcode data to Windows Mobile phones, like my HTC touch.
But I haven’t tried it on PC.
I think it works. Because 0n the set up CD there’s an application called SumlungScanPC.exe.
The one I bought is SL-MS30A.
They accept PayPal. I figure you can buy one directly from them.
